Russia is currently leading the medal tally after the fourth day of the 2009 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships 25m in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
With 23 gold, seven silver and two bronze medals, the athletes from Russia already showed strong performances and set various world records.
Australia is in second place with 12 gold, 12 silver and nine bronze medals. US athletes collected 11 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze medals so far, with athletes from Great Britain following with 11 gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals.
The World Championships will continue until 5 December 2009 in the Brazilian city, with over 260 athletes from 31 different countries participating in the IPC’s first Short Course World Championships in Swimming. The event is organized by the RIO2009 Organizing Committee and sanctioned by the Brazilian National Paralympic Committee and the IPC. The mascot for Rio 2009 is Otto, the swimming octopus and will undoubtedly make the Championships even more memorable for all visitors at the event.
