The third day of the 2009 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships 25m brought in more impressive finishes by athletes in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

 

A World record was set in the Men’s 100m Butterfly (S13) by Canada’s Brian Hill with his time of 57.04. Hill was followed by Germany’s Daniel Simon and Michel Tielbeke from the Netherlands, both finishing just under three seconds later. The top two positions in the Women’s 100m Butterfly (S13) also set World records. Poland’s Joanna Mendak finished first her time of 1:05.10 and Great Britain’s Rhiannon Henry just over a second later. Australia’s Prudence Watt came in third position.

 

For the Men’s 100m Freestyle (S5), Brazil’s Daniel De Faria set a World record with his time of 1:08.17. De Faria was followed by Spain’s Sebastian Rodriguez Veloso and France’s Hayri Simsek respectively. In the Women’s 100m Freestyle (S5), Czech Republic’s Bela Hlavackova came in first, and was followed by Denmark’s Karina Lauridsen and Lisette Desirre Teunissen from the Netherlands respectively.

 

Great Britain’s star athlete Eleanor Simmonds set a World record in the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (SM6) with her time of 3:08.80. Simmonds was followed by compatriots Natalie Jones and Elizabeth Johnson. A World record was also set in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley by Great Britain’s Sascha Kindred with his time of 2:41.24. Kindred was followed by Sweden’s Anders Olsson and South Africa’s Tadhg Slattery respectively.

 

The World Championships are taking place through 5 December 2009 in the Brazilian city, with over 260 athletes from 31 different countries participating in the IPC’s first Short Course World Championships in Swimming. The event is organized by the RIO2009 Organizing Committee and sanctioned by the Brazilian National Paralympic Committee and the IPC. The mascot for Rio 2009 is Otto, the swimming octopus and will undoubtedly make the Championships even more memorable for all visitors at the event.
