Open Water event concludes the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships Sunday, August 22, 2010
2010 IPC Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven break all records
 
During six days the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships took place in Eindhoven and one day in Eersel. A total of 649 athletes from 53 countries participated. A true record for the IPC Swimming World Championships. Next to the athletes approximately 6,500 supporters witnessed the races at the Pieter van den Hoogenband swimming stadium whereas 650 visitors watched the excellent performances of the athletes at the E3 Strand. This past week 68 world records were broken!

Last races of IPC 2010 Swimming World Championships Sunday, August 22, 2010
Natalie Du Toit faster than the men in her class (S1 through S10)
 
Today 32 athletes swam the last race of the IPC 2010 Swimming World Championships. This was the Open Water event at the E3 strand in Eersel. The sun was shining brightly and 650 supporters watched the athletes fight for the last medals in the five kilometre session. The atmosphere was excellent, just like all the other days during this tournament.

Class S2 M
In the men’s heats, it was the Russian Dmitry Kokarev who finished first in a time of 2:24.98. He was followed by the Polish Jacek Czeck who was the second to qualify for the finals (2:29.09). The third to to qualify was Francesco Bettella. He finished in a time of 2:31.42.

This morning athletes with a visual disability, swimming in class S11, S12 and S13, started the heats.
 
Class S11 M/W
The Chinese Bozun Yang was the first to qualify for tonight’s finals. He finished in a time of 1:10.71. His world record has been in his name since 2008. Viktor Smyrnov from the Ukraine finished second. It was an exciting race because within a second the Canadian Tildesley also finished the race.
 
Also in the women’s heats, the world record holder was the first to qualify for the finals. Daniela Schulte finished in a time of 1:22.10. This is two seconds from her world record. Second to finish was Cecilia Camellini from Italy. She finished in a time of 1:23.41. The Japanese Rina Akiyama was the third swimmer to qualify for tonight’s finals with a time of 1:24.11. These women swam a lot faster than their competition. Number four was over seven seconds behind number three. The competition for the medals looks decided. The numbers four until eight would have to do their very best to keep up with the top three.

Dutchman Maurice Deelen through to finals with fastest time
 
This morning athletes with a physical disability, in class S8, started their heats.
 
Class S8 M/W
In the men’s heats it was the Dutchman Maurice Deelen who finished with the fastest time (1:00.00). He was followed by the Russian Konstantin Lisenkov who was the second to qualify for the finals (1:00.54). The third to finish was Peter Leek from Australia (1:00.85).
 
The first to finish in the women’s heats was Jessica Long from the United States of America. Jacqueline Freney from Australia finished second and Stefanie Weinberg from Germany was the third to qualify for tonight’s finals.  Lisa den Braber from the Netherlands qualified for the finals with the sixth time.

Brazil en Australia win two in 50 metre Freestyle

 

This evening, the athletes with a physical disability, in the classes S9 and S10, swam their finals.

 

Class S9 M/W

The 50 metre Freestyle, class S9, was won by Matthew Cowdrey of Australia, earning the gold medal with a time of 25.53. The silver medal went to Zhi Guo (CHN) who completed the distance in 25.78. Tamas Toth (HUN) finished in third place, touching in at 26.16.

Tonight the finals started for the athletes with an intellectual disability, class SB4.

The men’s race was swum fastest by Daniel Dias from Brazil; his time of 1:36.96 was good for another gold medal in his name. Dias was followed by two Spaniards who took silver and bronze. Ricardo Ten swim a silver place time of 1:37.53 and Pablo Cimandevila swam the bronze time.

The heats of athletes with a physical disability, class S5, started their heats this morning.
 
Class S5 M/W
Brazilian Daniel Dias, who swam a new world record in the heats, also started successful this morning. He clocked the best time. It was a really exciting race, because only five hundredth of a second later Roy Perkins from the United States of America finished in a time of 2:44.63. The third to qualify for the finals was the Spanish Sebastian Rodriguez, who finished in a time of  2:55.97.
 
In the women’s heats the Norwegian Sarah Louise Rung was, as for the 100 metre Breaststroke earlier this morning, the fastest in a time of 2:56.17. Inbal Pezaro from Israel finished in a time of 3:00.25 and became second. The Dutch Lisette Teunissen was ranked third in a time of 3:18.12. She swam faster than during the qualifying races to be selected for these WC.

Athletes with a physical disability , who compete in the classes S6 and S7, started the heats.
 
Class S6 M/W
The German Sebastian Iwanow qualified first for the finals with the fastest time (1:09.03). He was followed Briton Matthew Whorwood, who finished in a time of 1:11.00.  The third to finish was the Brazilian swimmer  Adriano de Lima in a time of 1:11.25.
The current world record holder Anders Olsson finished fourth in a time of 1:11.56. Seeing that the times of the numbers two, three and four are so closely together, the competition for the golden medal will be extremely exciting.
 
The Dutch Mirjam de Koning-Peper, was first in the women’s heat with a time of 1:19.21. The Briton Eleanor Simmonds, current world record holder, was second (1:20.40). The German Tanja Groepper finished as third for the finals in a time of 1:22.33.

This morning athletes with a physical handicap, class S8, started their heats.
 
Classe S8 M/W
Yanpeng Wei from China tapped the finish wall more than a second earlier as his rivals. He clocked a time of 1:02.99. Frenchman Charles Rozoy took possession of the second place in the finals. The Australian Peter Leek became number three in a time of 1:04.72. These three men were the fastest in the qualification races previously to this championship. Dutchman Maurice Deelen just ran short. He was ranked ninth after the heats and got a place as substitute.
 
The American woman Jessica Long qualified first for the finals. She touched in at 1:13.31. Number two and three are both of Chinese origin. Xiaqin Jin qualified second in a time of 1:15.85. Third was Weiyuan Lu in her time of 1:16.26. World record-holder Amanda Everlove (USA) was the fourth to reach the finals.

Athletes with a visual impairment, in classes S11, S12 and S13, started their heats this morning.

Victor Smyrnov from the Ukraine was the first man to qualify for the finals with a time of 4:59.11. He was closely followed by Philip Scholz from the United States of America. He was the second swimmer to qualify for the finals with a time of 4:59.16. The third to finish was Oleksandr Myroshnychenko from the Ukraine (5:02.47).
 
The fastest woman was the German Daniela Shulte. The Canadian Amber Thomas finished second and the Swiss Chantal Cavin was the third to qualify for the finals.

This morning athletes with a physical disability, swimming in the class SB2 and SB3, started their heats.

The Mexican world record-holder Arnulfo Castorena ranked himself first for tonight’s finals. His time of 59.22 was three seconds above his own world record. Thai Somchai Doungkaew qualified second in a time of 1:01.48. Both were fastest in their own heat. Charkorn Kaewsri, compatriot of Somchai Doungkaew was disqualified. Third to pass to the finals was Michael Demarco in a time of 1:02.35.

This morning athletes with a physical disability, swimming in class S9 and S10, started the heats.
 
Class S9 M/W
The fastest man of this morning was Zhi Guo from China who was the first to qualify for the finals. He was followed by Matthew Cowdrey from Austrialia, who was the second to qualify for the finals. The third to finish was Tamas Toth from Hungary.
 
The Briton Louise Watkin was the first woman to finish. The South African Natalie du Toit finished second and the Russian Irina Grazhdanova was the third to qualify for the finals.

The athletes with a physical disability, in class SB4, started their heats this morning.

The Norwegian Sarah Louise Rung has clocked the fastest time at the 100 metre Breaststroke, class SB4, this morning. She swam a time of 1:54.71 and got close to the world record (1:54.51) of the Frenchwoman Hess. It is a fantastic and remarkable achievement. The world record already stands for a decade. Inbal Pezaro ended a considerable time behind her. She touched in seven seconds later. The Czech Bela Hlavackova qualified third in a time of 2:02.39. Naiver Ome Ramos from Colombia was disqualified and did not start.

This morning athletes with a physical disability, swimming in class S7, started the heats.

The fastest man of this morning was the Brit Jonathan Fox. He could swim himself into the finals with a time of 1:12,35. He came quite close to his own standing world record of 1:11,99. After 1:13,89 Mihovil Spanja from Croatia touched in with a time of 1:13,89. The top three is closed through Chinese Nan Gao. He clocked a time of 1:15,41. The numbers four and five of the heats touched in soon after Nan Gao. The athletes cannot afford themselves to weaken in the final. They have to give everything to win a medal.

Enhamed Mohamed was the first man to finish at 100 metre Freestyle. He clocked a time of 58.59. The Chinese Yang Bozun finished second. His time of 59.03 was good for the silver medal. The bronze was won by Keiichi Kimura in a time of 1:02.12.

Tonight the athletes with a physical handicap in the class S8, competed in the finals.

With the Dutch Princess Margriet in the audience, the British swimmer Thomas Young won the 400 metres Freestyle. With a time of 4:36.45 he defeated his six adversaries. The German Cristoph Burkard won the silver medal in a time of 4:39.90. The fight for 3rd and 4th place was very tense but in the end it was Jiachao Wang from China who took the bronze with Sean Fraser trailing 4th place.

During the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester Mike van der Zanden (S10) won gold at the 100 meter Butterfly. He beat his personal best swum at the Paralympic Games in Beijing by clocking 58.88. His old record of 59.34 was then good for a bronze medal. At the 100 meter Freestyle Van der Zande finished 5th.
